Chimpanzee tracking on Lake Tanganyika.
Mahale Mountains National Park is one of Africa’s most remote and rewarding wildlife destinations. Steep, forested slopes rise straight from the white-sand shore of Lake Tanganyika, the deepest lake in Africa and one of the clearest, and the mountains are home to a large community of wild chimpanzees.
There are no roads into Mahale. Guests arrive by light aircraft or by boat, and once there the only way to move around is on foot or by water. This keeps visitor numbers low and the experience deeply personal.
Tracking chimpanzees here is a physical but unforgettable experience. Guides lead small groups into the forest to find habituated chimpanzees, and then you spend time watching them feed, groom, play and travel. Afterwards you can swim, kayak or snorkel in the lake.
Highlights
Mahale has some of the most habituated wild chimpanzees in Africa, which allows close and respectful viewing.
Few places combine mountain rainforest and a clear freshwater beach so closely.
Access only by air or water means very small groups and a true sense of wilderness.
Swim, snorkel or kayak in exceptionally clear water that holds hundreds of species of colourful fish.
Experiences
Guided treks in small groups, with strict rules about distance and time spent with the chimpanzees.
Swimming, kayaking, snorkelling and sunset boat trips from the camp beach.
Look for monkeys, forest birds and butterflies with a park guide.
Some visitors add a hike to nearby streams and waterfalls when time allows.
What you may see
Chimpanzees are the star. Red colobus, blue and red-tailed monkeys, baboons and a wide variety of forest birds are also found. The lake itself is rich in fish species, many of them unique to Lake Tanganyika.
Wildlife is wild. Sightings depend on season, weather and luck, and your guide will always put you in the best position.
Planning
The best time for tracking, as chimpanzees tend to be easier to find and trails are drier.
Still good, with fewer visitors, though rain can begin.
Some camps close and trekking is harder, so it is not the recommended window.
Most guests fly to the park’s airstrip on a scheduled or charter light aircraft, often via Arusha or Katavi. A longer alternative is a boat journey from Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika. Flights and transfers are arranged for you.
A small number of beach camps and lodges operate on the lakeshore, generally on a full-board basis with activities included. We recommend at least three nights so you have more than one trek.

Still unsure? Send us your question and a planner will answer personally.
The dry season from about June to October is the most reliable. Chimpanzees can be found year-round, but trekking is easier when the forest is drier.
It can be steep and humid. Treks vary from short and easy to several hours, so a moderate level of fitness helps. Your guide will match the pace to the group.
We suggest three to four nights, which allows more than one trek and time on the lake. Many guests pair it with Katavi.
