Quiet reefs and whale sharks.
Mafia Island is a quiet, unhurried island south of Zanzibar, known for its coral reefs and a protected marine park. It sees far fewer visitors than Zanzibar, and that is exactly why people come: empty beaches, calm water and a slow, local rhythm.
The marine park protects coral gardens, mangroves and seagrass beds that support a wide range of fish, turtles and other marine life. Diving and snorkelling here are excellent, and between about October and March the island is one of the few places in the region where whale sharks are seen.
On land, the island offers village walks, historic ruins on nearby Chole Island and traditional dhow sailing.
